Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services is currently regulating the law of nurse aides in that state.
The approval of these professionals is based on their training and examination.
Individually approved trainees can be given a “Nurse Aide Trainee II” certification, allowing them to work up to 4 months while waiting for certification.
Training: Back to School
An aspiring CNA can take a regular training in Kansas; other individuals with previous healthcare education can enroll in specially approved nursing aide programs.
General training courses are based on state curriculum and usually take at least 90 hours to complete.
Clinical instruction (evaluated by a registered nurse) in a simulated lab, adult care home or hospital makes at least half of training process.
A person who already works in healthcare sector can be allowed to take the test (based on Licensed Practical Nurse, Registered Nurse or Licensed Mental Health Technician license from any other US state).
Being a current nursing or LMFT student can also count as training: in this case it is necessary to have supervised geriatric experience and basic nursing training.(including nutrition and feeding, hygiene, transfer and ambulation, positioning and range of motion).
Once a person satisfying one of these pathways is approved for the testing, he or she can immediately start working as a nurse aide trainee (overseen by LPN or RN).
For those who can’t choose the latter paths and must enroll in a training process, we have prepared a list of schools to choose from.

CNA Exams: a Quick Guide
After finishing a training course, candidates are required to pass the test (recently computerized) with a minimum score of 75%.
For those using English as a secondary language, there is an option of using a dictionary; time limits can be extended as well.
As in most cases (in other states as well), a candidate can be tested 3 times (within a year), after which retraining is required.
The exams are attended in various cities all over the state of Kansas; if a candidate is an employee, there is a chance his institution may cover the fees.
In cases where there is a verified equivalence, an out-of-state nursing aide can be certified without testing (according to Kansas Administrative Regulations).
In cases without such equivalence, nurse aides coming from outside of the state have the option of taking a test without having to go through a training course.
After the test is passed, the application process remains,
Collecting applications as well as fees if often done by the facility itself (its instructors).
To challenge their status or apply for the testing, out-of- state candidates should contact the Department of Health and Disability Services.
After 24 months without work activity, a nurse aide is considered inactive.
In this case, there are 2 options: taking a refresher course, or going through a task checklist with a registered nurse (at a hospital, long-term care facility or a school laboratory).
It cannot be done through a home health agency.
The phone number of Health Occupations Credentialing is 785-296-1240, and the Kansas Nurse Aide Registry can be called at 785-296-6877.
